I've tried hard to not become emersed in the news reports from Virginia Tech, but it is hard not to, especially being a university employee. I keep thinking that all of those students, not just the ones who were killed or injured, but all of the Virginia Tech students who got up Monday morning ready to head back to class after a weekend of studying, possibly traveling and having fun with friends, not knowing that tragedy and grief would soon enter their world. I cannot even begin to wrap my brain around the concept of what actually occurred inside those two buildings on the Virginia Tech campus. I clearly remember being a college student and sitting in class and the last thing I ever would have imagined is a gunman walking into the door. The stories of heroism are amazing - selfless individuals who risked their own lives to try to save others. The brave, selfless act of a Holocaust survivor who barricaded a door so that his students could escape, students who bravely barricaded a door to keep the gunman out, a resident assistant who came to help another student....all amazing, beautiful stories about the strength of the human spirit.
